Just bought a tach from a ysr 80(gear driven) and was wondering if anyone knows how to install it? I'm an idiot, and to be honest I don't even know if it will work. Thanks!!

Is it a factory YSR80 tach? Is your motor a YSR80? If not your missing the internal gear & it wont work. Do you a YSR80 speedo bracket? Looks like this. if not youll need to mod yours. So if its a Stock YSR80 cable driven tach, & all your stuf is correct, its simple. mount the tach, jump a wire for the light (unless you have the correct harnice, then just plug it in.) run the cable down to the motor, pull out the plug, & bolt it in place. Look at the rear of the motor in the pic & youll see that I have a tach gear mounted.

I have a 50, and it is a stock tach. Do you know if I can retrofit an internal gear? ( I was under the (perhaps false) impression that some jap 50s came with a tach, which is why I bought it. If an internal gear can be retrofited do you know where I could locate one? Thanks Lance!!

Whoa, wait a second, I am an idiot. After looking at the tach, I think I have the gear. The cable attaches to the gear using a "screw down cap" the gear is attached to a body with a rubber o-ring. Is this what you were referring to? if so how is the gear installed? Does it just slide in after I remove the plug? Also there doesn't seem to be any way to firmly attach the "gear body to the exterrior of the motor. I know there is a threaded hole near the plug, am I missing a bracket? Finally, while I tested the tach by chucking it up in a drill (it worked) the gear will slide out of the "body" with a slight pull, but will notch back in and function, is this normal? Hate to ask so many ?'s but I would love to get this thing to work!!

No. There is a gear that fits inside the case that turns the gear you have. Without it your out of luck. I think your going to be extremely luck to find one. I have one, but I also have a cable driven Tach (although its not a true YSR tach. ) I hope to some day get the correct tach, since the bike was an original YSR80 w/ tach .

If you pull your rubber plug youll see that there is no gear for the drive you have to mesh on.

Hey Lance just wanted to thank you for your thorough explaination. I actually got lucky, and ordered all my missing parts through TCR, I needed the drive gear as you mentioned, the shaft(or pin) that it sits on, and the top mounting bracket. They had it all in stock! Also figured to replace(upgrade) clutch while I'm in there. But again thank you for your help!! ;D

Wow, did you luck out. Ive been told that they were no longer available... If you dont mind me asking, how much does TCR charge for the parts?

Well, I can get you the specific prices when the invoice shows up, but after subtracting everything else I got, the gear, shaft, and mounting clip were around 45.00. But I also will have money in gaskets, etc. TCR said the tach cable was the hardest to find, apparently they stopped production of those early on. While I don't know for sure, she even asked me if I needed the tach(as if she had, or could locate one). So if you need one you should give them a call.
