Hello everyone, new to the board here. live in south Florida just moved to Florida from Iowa in January.
I have a problem with my ysr. i have had it for 6 years and its my third one that i have owned. i have had the engine rebuilt and i think its been bored to 60cc i think.
MODS toomey pipe and a new toomey silencer flat side carb from TCR K&N filter 1/4 turn throttle
14/44 just put on because i could only go 40mph with the 12/44 now that i put the 14 on i can get 45mph
why am i not getting any speed out of my ysr
if anyone could help thanks

Id check your compression. (There is defanatly a serious problem if thats all you are getting for speed.) Also youll need to rejet the carb. Im positive that Iowa is way higher altitude than the sea level of Florida. Check how tight your chain is & adjust if needed, Check your wheel berrings (you may have one thats frozen or worn out & binding.)
Mine is .25 over, 20mm carb/K&N, 13-44, Toomey pipe. I can go about 65.

How Long has it been since the cases split? There is a possibility that your cases are due to be split and have the Main Bearings replaced, your crank inspected and or balanced, and then freshly re-sealed again.
If the cases have lost their seal, you will experience poor performance, regardless how fresh your top-end is.
Also, inspect your reeds.
Any hickups in the throttle?.......0-1/4, 1/4 to 1/2, 1/2 to 3/4, or 3/4 to full throttle
As Lance suggested, verify all your moving parts, and adjust or replace as necessary.
+1 on the 13/44 gearing change
Any case, keep us informed of what it was that caused the problem, and the fix, for others to learn from.

Fixed the problem a little, I have a Toomey pipe and it wasn’t sealed the greatest at the head of the engine. Since there is no nut just the spring. Is that the way Toomey pipes fit??? Anyone have a picture of what that should look like. Anyways I bought some black high temp sealant and a strip of exhaust tape and a clamp and made that thing titer. While riding I could tell a huge difference in HP. but still not going fast as I would like. I gained like 10mph by doing that. So now i am up to 55mph almost, which is, allot better. I think it might have something to do with my clutch I don’t think it is adjusted properly. Can’t seem to get it right too much play in the aftermarket cable from TCR almost need some kind of spacer??? I am going to do a compression test this week at my work to see what its at. The thing runs great just not getting the top end that everyone else says they get.
About the reeds I have the stock reeds. I never bought aftermarket I guess I don’t know what they do to help the performance??? Is it important to upgrade to different and what are good reeds?
All moving parts seem to be ok. When I restored my bike I bought all new bearings and bushing for the whole bike. (not in the engine) I have no clue when the last time the cases were split. I have owned this bike for 4 1/2 years and never opened the case up. The guy who rebuilt the engine for me said that everything seemed to be ok, I don’t know if he opened the case or not.

From what little I've learned, the fiber glass reeds vs. the steel reeds help in easier flex and throttle responses when accelarating. Since the reeds are fiberglass, they flex back and forth more as you open and close the throttle. Also, if the steel ones decide to break off one day, they supposedly rip through the engine components whereas the fiberglass ones will simply get disentegrated as they pass through the engine's combustion phases.
These little 2 smokers are real finiky. if you adjust one thing and not another, they wont behave properly. they have to be farely tuned all the time and when one component goes off whack.....let's say such as the jetting or a different pipe, or a bigger carb, then all other components have to be matched.
Hope this helps some.

Toomey pipes came with the crapy spring set-up your talking about. Either call Team calimari & see if they have any of the bolt on flanges still Or contact www.toomey.com/ They might have them? The Boysen (boysen reeds are a 2 stage reed) or Carbon fiber reeds (from TCR) are way better than stock. Like mentioned the stock reeds will distroy your top end when they fail. your throtle responce will be a lot better with either one. The only down side is they dont last as long as the stock. I have about 5000 miles on my Boisen reeds & am thinking of chainging them for new ones. Also pull out the front motor bolt & see if it is wet. If so you have a center case leak & will need to get it fixed.

Where is this front motor bolt? is there a picture or diagram that could show me where it is? Also what did you use to seal up that pipe?

I chopped up the stock pipe & welded the exact same length head pipe on to it as was there orignaly. Or you can get a flange from team Calamari & weld it on. Just be sure your not changing the length of the pipe.
As for the front motor bolt, its the one that holds the front of the motor in. (just behind the front wheel)

Ray (flaysr50) is in FT Lauderdale and I'm in North Miami Beach near Aventura Mall.
If I were to guess, I would say it's your main jet. What was the weather like in Iowa? Was it cool and dry? You might have to go a bit leaner. But just to be sure, do a plug chop, if the plug is a little darker than it should be and it's a little moist when you pull it, you are running rich.
