Some 80's are fine. What you need to look out for is an unbalanced motor. They are the real problem. Pipes for the 2 strokes can be a problem as well. I have a DT100 & it bolts right in & has about the same vibration as the stock YSR50 motor. I also know the old aircooled YZ80 motors can have the lighting coil added to them & are ballanced as well. You can get a XR100 & it will be almost a direct bolt in as well. all you need to do is make some spacers fot the front motor moints & get a lighting kit. The Derbi 50 motor needs just a fiew mods to fit as well. But it will cost you around 800 to 1300 to do. If Im not mistaken they have a "Baja kit" for the TTR125 as well as for the TTR230.
Thje limits are the over all size of the motor. Tony has a YZ426F shoo horned into his monster YSR. There are others with 250cc blaster motors, YZF 250's, DT200's, XR200's, etc. All take $, time & skills to do. Some are easy & dont cost that much & others are very hard & take tons of time, skills & $ to do.
It all comes down to your skills, tools & cash flow. I will try to help you out in any way I can. Feel free to email me or call me on the weekend if you want to discuss any other options or questions. (saterday or sunday are tthe only days I can talk for free on the cell phone) 208-440-4935
Check out the links part of the site. I have put a bunch of links on there to other sites & boards. There is even a guy who makes a kit to instal the chinies horizontal motors. Although I dont know how much power thyy have or what cind of reliability you would have with the motors.
