My blinkers are a little dimmed, but when I connect each signal directly to a battery charger the bulbs are strongly lit. Is the old relay a problem?  |

The relay is simply a switch that turns On & Off, hence, illuminates your turn signals On & Off when the switch is being used.
Sounds like you need a new battery.

Are the signals stock? Are the bulbs 6V???
If so the batery is probably the problem. You can also try new bulbs. ( they do get dimmer as they get lots of use & the years go by)
